Marcus Mariota, QB, Atlanta Falcons

During his two-year stint as the backup quarterback for Derek Carr, Marcus Mariota became sort of a fan favorite. For some of Raider Nation, the clamoring for him to replace Carr as a starter was loud at times, and was never bigger than when he had an outstanding performance against the Los Angeles Chargers after Carr went down to injury.

A former No. 2 overall pick, Mariota was with Vegas to try and earn another shot at starting in the NFL, and he got that shot with the Atlanta Falcons, signing a two-year, $18.75 million deal this past offseason. However, Mariota’s play left much to be desired, and by the time the season was over, rookie Desmond Ridder had replaced him as the team’s starting quarterback.

All told, Mariota started 13 games, went 5-8, and had 15 touchdown passes against nine interceptions. He had his moments, like when he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week against San Francisco in Week 6, but after losing his job to Ridder, he was placed on injured reserve to end his season.

This offseason, we will see a new batch of Raiders players enter free agency, and try their hand with a new organization. Hopefully, for that group, they fare much better than these three did leaving the desert after the 2022 season.
