Disaster struck in the Las Vegas Raiders' training camp practice on Sunday afternoon. Just days after taking down the Houston Texans in a preseason game, the Raiders returned to the practice field for the first time. Unfortunately, star running back Ashton Jeanty reportedly left with a serious leg injury.
"#Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty left practice early after suffering an apparent knee injury," wrote ESPN's Ryan McFadden. "During the team period, he was diving for a catch and landed awkwardly. He was helped off the field by trainers and couldn’t put any pressure on his right leg. Entire team took a knee and said a prayer."
The exact nature and severity of the injury are unknown at this time. The Raiders did not have an immediate statement.
Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty leaves practice with apparent serious knee injury
This is just awful, awful news coming out of Las Vegas. Obviously, the injury was severe enough that the team stopped practice, and that doesn't typically happen for an ankle sprain or jammed finger. These players and coaches have been around enough to know what's what, and it doesn't look good.
Of course, a promising report could always surface, and maybe Jeanty and the Raiders avoided disaster. Either way, the young stud running back could miss some time to begin the 2026 NFL season, even if he isn't out for the whole year. So much remains unknown at this juncture.
Jeanty was on the cusp of having a breakout year, as he still churned out good production as a rookie despite an awful overall offensive situation. Until we receive more news about his health, however, those thoughts need to be put on hold.
Fourth-round rookie Mike Washington Jr. is next in line to be the starting running back in Las Vegas, as he was pushing for reps and a serious role anyway. But if Jeanty is out for a significant period of time, then a lot will be placed on the shoulders of a first-year player who was taken on Day 3.
If Jeanty is, in fact, out for a substantial amount of time, then the Raiders may be forced to make an addition to the room. The veteran market is slim at this point, so John Spytek may need to comb the waiver wire or explore potential low-stakes trades before the season.
Let's all continue to hope that this injury is not as serious as the picture being painted about it makes it sound.
