The Las Vegas Raiders are finally in a position to draft their quarterback of the future. After years of winning meaningless games and falling out of the position to do so, the franchise was able to land the No. 1 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.
It is widely assumed that Fernando Mendoza will be the pick after an incredible 2025 season, which saw him lead the Indiana Hoosiers to their first-ever national title. There has been plenty of chatter about the quarterback's fit in head coach Klint Kubiak's offense, with NFL Network's Bucky Brooks claiming he almost can't fail in the highly-touted system.
Meanwhile, NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah recently revealed that Mendoza is effectively already beginning to learn the offense. The Athletic's Ted Nguyen became the latest to praise the fit between the former Hoosiers star and Kubiak's system, noting how his skillset is tailor-made for the offense.
Las Vegas Raiders reporter details Fernando Mendoza's fit in Klint Kubiak's offense
Mendoza has proven that he is one of the best players, regardless of position, in this year's draft and the clear top quarterback prospect. While the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner may not start right away at the next level, he should fit seamlessly into the new system in Las Vegas.
Nguyen appeared on Jesse Merrick's Silver & Black Sports Network Podcast, where he discussed why the two sides are a perfect match.
"My comparison for him is a mobile Jared Goff, and we've seen Jared Goff execute this offense. I think he has the elite ball placement ability. We haven't seen a ton of over-the-middle type of throws, but I think he has the accuracy and ball placement to be able to execute those at a high level," Nguyen explained. "Being able to read defenses, being able to read coverages, being able to handle a lot from a mental perspective. Because this offense does ask you to do a lot of things at the line of scrimmage, as far as killing plays. They might give you one or two plays at the line of scrimmage. You have to pick which one you have to run. I think he has the mental acuity to do all those things. And I just think that the ball placement and accuracy is what you want in this offense. He's tall enough to where he's able to see over the middle and make those types of throws. If he was a shorter quarterback, then you might question, can he do those things? Because you didn't see a ton of it on film. So, I think the ball placement ability, the height, the prototypical size, and just what we think he can do mentally fits with what Kubiak wants from a quarterback."
Not only will Tyler Linderbaum ease the burden of killing plays and asking to do a lot at the line of scrimmage, but Kubiak has proven that he can maximize the potential of quarterbacks, often helping veterans revive their careers within his system.
With Mendoza, he will have the opportunity to coach a top draft pick with plenty of upside from the jump, so the returns could be even greater.
While most of Raider Nation is excited about the opportunity to get Mendoza in Silver and Black, his detractors have pointed out that he ran too many run-pass options in college, questioning whether that will translate to the NFL.
The projected No. 1 overall pick previously noted that, outside of RPOs, he believes his college system was similar to Kubiak's. Nguyen shared a similar sentiment, adding that the RPOs led to long-yardage situations on second and third down, which Mendoza thrived in.
"I think being clutch and being able to stay calm in those high leverage situations is a trait that you either have or you don't have. And, I think, in those situations, even though, yeah, some of those were fade throws, some of those were back shoulder balls, those throws are very hard to make. Those are high difficulty throws to make," Nguyen noted. "So, even though maybe the read isn't like a professional one to two to three to four type of read, you still have to be able to execute those high difficulty throws, put those balls into good locations. And he did that not just a little bit of the time, he did that a majority of the time, and it was just so consistent in those high leverage situations."
With Mendoza appearing certain to be the Raiders' future under center, his ability to thrive in Kubiak's offense will be key for the pairing to find the success the franchise has left fans longing for. Nguyen's comments should give Raider Nation plenty of confidence that the quarterback prospect and the well-regarded system, which has proven to yield positive results, will be a perfect fit.
