Not Kiffin’s Guy

In football, no matter how good you are, if you’re not the G.M.’s or the coach’s guy, you don’t get a chance. Hue Jackson was a good coach that made the Raiders exciting but was fired for not being McKenzie’s guy. Denarius Moore, a dynamic receiver who’s actually playing well now, seems to have fallen too far out of favor with the new regime because he’s not their guy.

And at USC, Butler’s role was reduced after his Pac-12 All-Freshman team campaign because Kiffin’s guy. Kiffin’s guys were Robert Woods and Marquise Lee, both of which Kiffin recruited to go to USC with him. So Butler eventually transferred to San Diego State where he didn’t put up big numbers with his new school, new coach, new system and a new quarterback.

I said new a few times too many times just like Butler did, leading not to the breakout senior season he was looking for. Butler was only able to amass 24 catches for 347 yards and four touchdowns in his senior year. But the transfer was still a good move because his production was more than twice what it was his previous year under Kiffin.
