With a win in Super Bowl XLIX, the New England Patriots have moved ahead of the Oakland/LA Raiders in the Super Bowl count. The Raiders have continued their fall from grace and have not reached the playoffs since their last Super Bowl trip in 2002.

The Raiders have long been a pillar of the NFL, but have slowly lost their luster over the years.
According to statista.com the current leader is the Pittsburgh Steelers with six championships since 1967. A close second are the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys with five each. Followed by a trio of teams including the New England Patriots, New York Giants, and Green Bay Packers with four Super Bowl wins.
Theses teams have maintained some level of consistency and excellence throughout the years, especially as of late. While all of these organizations have had their down years, only the Dallas Cowboys have not reached a Super Bowl since 2010.
The Raiders are currently tied with the Washington Redskins with 3 Super Bowl wins. If you were to ask, most people would say the Redskins are closer to the Super Bowl than the Raiders, mostly based on recent success. But the margin is small and the Raiders should be a vastly improved team in 2015. Meanwhile the Redskins could be in flux while trying to figure out if RGIII is their franchise QB.
So why is this important? Well the Raiders organization is one that prides itself on its history. It is also a franchise that at least in the past has been one of the faces of not only the NFL, but American sports in general. It is a worldwide franchise with one of the best symbols and logos ever! The Silver and Black are a way of life for some, but most importantly can be a marketing goldmine for future investors and fans alike.
What’s missing is the wins. Success has proved hard to come by, but that is exactly why “Rings” or Super Bowl titles matter. A team that wins has a better chance had securing funding for a new stadium, improving facilities and attracting new players. It is time for the Raiders to be mentioned as one of the best again. It is time for the Raiders to be in the playoffs and fighting for another ring.
The Super Bowl for a 3-13 Raiders organization seems like light years away, but the winds are changing in Oakland. An experienced coaching staff and solid core of young players could be the starting point of something great. So when will the Raiders win their next Super Bowl ring?
