In AFC West news, the Kansas City Chiefs have made a trade to select quarterback Patrick Mahomes of Texas Tech.
The AFC West team that had the last pick among the division ended up being the second to pick, thanks to a trade up. The Kansas City Chiefs made a trade up from the 27th pick to no. 10 to select quarterback Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech. The Charger had selected WR Mike Williams at no. 7.
The #Chiefs gave up their No. 1 in 2018 and their 3 this year to move up to No. 10.

Rapoport lays out the trade details — the no. 27 pick this year, a third round this year and a future first round. A hefty price tag, but that’s the cost to move up 17 spots to draft a quarterback.
Per Over The Cap, Alex Smith has a 2017 cap number of $16.9 million and a 2018 cap number of $20.6 million. The dead money hit if he is released is quite steep. So with that much money coming his way, it remains to be seen if he’ll turn into a highly paid backup quarterback and mentor this year or next year.

Mahomes is a risky pick, with serious boom or bust potential. Comparisons to Brett Favre run rampant, as he’s got a cannon with a gunslinger mentality. He’s an excellent fit for Andy Reid, so this pick could potentially spell trouble for the Raiders and the rest of the AFC West.
The Chiefs are generally a formidable regular season opponent who lose in the first round of the playoffs. A high level quarterback would almost certainly change that, as opposed to fielding the always conservative Alex Smith.
