Raiders win in primetime over Dolphins, 27-24

Needing to step up in a big primetime spot, the Oakland Raiders delivered, as they knocked off the Miami Dolphins on Sunday Night Football in Week 9, 27-24. The Raiders improve to 4-5 on the year, while Miami stumbles to 4-4 on the season.

Oakland was the only team this week in the AFC West to secure a victory, as the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs lost earlier in the day. The Los Angeles Chargers were in their bye week. It was a make-or-break week for the Silver and Black,

This game between the Raiders and Dolphins went down to the wire. While it looked like the Raiders were going to win it easily late in the fourth quarter, Jay Cutler would lead the Dolphins on a touchdown drive that would bring it within three. Once Amari Cooper recovered the onside kick for the Raiders, it was time for Oakland victory formation.

Sunday Night Football was more good than bad for the Raiders, even with the victory. Marshawn Lynch was able to make a positive impact in the ground game in his first game back from suspension. His two touchdown runs were the difference in this game.

Quarterback Derek Carr had a nice rapport with tight end Jared Cook this evening. Their ability to connect eight times allowed Carr to spread the ball around and throw for 300 yards in the game. That being said, there is still plenty of room for improvement for the Raiders heading into their bye week.

Though undermanned, Oakland has to figure out ways to be more competitive in the secondary. Cutler diced the secondary all night, completing almost all of his passes heading into halftime. The Raiders have now gone a ridiculous nine games to start the season without an interception. With Tom Brady coming up in two weeks, Oakland needs to start getting ready now for that huge game in Mexico City in Week 11.

Overall, this was an entertaining game on Sunday night. Both teams played well enough to win. However, the Raiders’ ability to punch it in the end zone with Lynch proved to be the difference. One has to wonder if this game would have been different had Jay Ajayi not been traded to the Philadelphia Eagles earlier in the week. Raider Nation can celebrate for the next two weeks with a victory.

1. Marshawn Lynch: Lynch had 13 carries for 57 yards and two touchdowns. He would also have two catches for six yards.
2. Jared Cook: Cook had eight catches for 126 yards.
3. Derek Carr: Carr completed 21 of 30 passes for 300 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Next Game

Oakland will be on its bye in Week 10. The Raiders will have a full week to not only prepare for the New England Patriots, but will have to get acclimated to playing at elevation. Oakland will play New England on Nov. 19 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. CBS will have the 4:25 p.m. ET telecast.

4-5 is not where we would have wanted the Raiders to be heading into the bye. However, the AFC wild card race is still very much in flux. It looks like the AFC South will be getting two teams in with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans. Maybe the Raiders can sneak in as the No. 6 seed? They are only two games back of Kansas City for the division lead by the way. Good win and go Raiders!
