Cornerback

Like with safety, cornerback is a position that the Raiders have tried to address in the last few years and no, it has not turned out well. Oakland used its No. 24 overall pick to draft Gareon Conley out of Ohio State in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Off-the-field issues delayed his arrival in Oakland until right before camp broke. A bad case of shin splints limited him to just two games played in his rookie campaign with the Silver and Black. Ohio State defensive backs are usually pro-ready, but Oakland absolutely wanted more production out of Conley than they got in 2017.

Former free agent acquisition David Amerson couldn’t get his foot right this season. He dealt with a ton of injuries and that severely limited the Raiders at cornerback going forward. Guys like T.J. Carrie, Dexter McDonald and Sean Smith got a ton of run this year at cornerback for the Raiders, for better or worse. Carrie will be a free agent and could have played his way out of Oakland as a slot cornerback.

Taking a cornerback in the first-round could be a frustrating move for Raiders fans. But would that be wrong though? Cornerback feels like a position that the Raiders will end up using a second or third-round pick on. There are plenty of NFL-ready defensive backs to be had in day two of the draft. Expect Oakland to potentially grab one then.
