Mark Fields – Cornerback, Clemson

Clemson is putting out NFL talent like a conveyor belt at this point, but Mark Fields is one of the players that is slipping through the cracks. He put people on notice at the combine running a 4.37 and displayed very fluid movement skills. However, there just isn’t a ton of film to refer back to with Fields. He never had a for sure starting job at Clemson which is a school that’s proven over the years they have no problem starting whoever is best.

But when you do watch Fields, he has all the tools of a man cover corner with good change of direction and ability to play the ball. He also shows a desire and ability to support in run defense. His frame is not ideal at 5’9 and 192lbs, so that will lower him on draft boards. He also had a past foot injury as a junior, but I’m not sure how big a concern that truly is.

Fields will be a little quick to jump on a receiver’s first move and just makes up for it by being so fast. That will not work in the NFL so he’ll need to improve his ability to process routes.

The real question is what are teams hearing when they ask the Clemson staff why he wasn’t a consistent starter?

Because you watch the national championship and what limited tape he has and it looks like he might be the best corner on the team.
