Raiders 2023 free agency: 3 teams that make sense for Derek Carr
New Orleans Saints
The first team that Carr is likely to look at is also the most obvious. As mentioned, the Raiders gave the Saints permission to meet with Carr earlier in the week. By all accounts, the meeting was a lengthy one that was received well by all parties. On paper, the team is certainly a fit for the quarterback as well.
Firstly, New Orlean’s head coach is none other than Dennis Allen whom Raiders fans will remember as the team’s head coach when they selected Carr back in 2014. While he would be fired quickly into the season, it is clear that Allen was a fan of Carr’s as he made him the starting quarterback as a rookie.
On the field, the Saints are loaded with offensive weapons for Carr to take advantage of. With Alvin Kamara in the backfield, he would be an elite weapon for a quarterback who has been known to favor the checkdown. At wide receiver, they have a rookie of the year candidate in Chris Olave and the potential return of a former All-Pro in Michael Thomas.
In addition, the Saints would give him a chance to play indoors once again so he can avoid the cold weather that has plagued him in his career.
How the Saints will be able to afford to pay Carr is anyone’s guess. Currently, at nearly negative 60 million in cap space, the team will have to work a miracle to get Carr in the building. However, they have been known to pull some tricks in the past so it is possible they get a deal done.
