Matt Schaub Visiting With Baltimore Ravens

When it was reported by Adam Schefter early Monday that former Oakland Raiders backup quarterback Matt Schaub would be visiting one of three interested teams this week the most interesting names were the New York Jets and the Atlanta Falcons. Schaub’s former team in Atlanta as well as a Jets team that signed the player who replaced Schaub in Houston in Ryan Fitzpatrick both reportedly being interested in adding the former Raider to their rosters.

However it looks like Schaub will be considering the third team who have expressed interest in his backup services, reportedly set to visit the Baltimore Ravens later this week as an emergency option for Joe Flacco if all goes well in contract negotiations.

Aaron Wilson, a Ravens/NFL insider, broke the news that Schaub would be visiting with the Ravens, looking to join the AFC North team where he would firmly be a camp arm or backup on the roster. Flacco’s presence offering little upside for the aging Schaub in terms of starting, but most importantly giving the vet a chance to extend his NFL career just a little bit longer while stacking 16 more game checks if he makes the roster as the #2 guy in Baltimore.

Wilson also reported that the Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans are also interested in Schaub, continuing what is a shockingly strong market for a backup who flamed out in Oakland in losing his job to Derek Carr amidst arm issues that were a big reason why he declined in his final year as a starter in Houston.

The Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans have also expressed interest.The Ravens have been looking for a candidate to back up starter Joe Flacco. They have 2014 sixth-round NFL draft pick Keith Wenning under contract, but would ideally like to have an experienced veteran in place behind Flacco."

Veteran quarterbacks have the luxury of always having a strong market, teams quick to add whatever former starting arms they can in case of emergency, but Schaub’s case is staggering as there are five reported teams in the hunt for his services. Schefter reporting three and Wilson adding to the list to make the market on the backup a hot one going into April.

Wherever Schaub lands it will be deserved for a player who took a reduced role in Oakland with pride, remaining a professional even after it became clear the drafting of Derek Carr would mean the trade for the veteran wouldn’t be to start for the Raiders. That class Schaub showed likely has helped draw interest from around the league as teams are interested in backups who know their role and accept it, something that was shown with the experience in 2014 with the Raiders as well as during the Case Keenum transition in Houston with Schaub handling the news he would not be starting very well both times.

While in Baltimore, Dallas and Atlanta the veteran leadership of Schaub won’t be needed there is a real market for him as a backup and he should sign soon. If it is with the Ravens the opportunity to hold a clipboard for Flacco would be an alright opportunity, and you never know in the NFL when you will be called into duty even if the highly paid starter in Baltimore rarely misses a game making the chance of Schaub inking a deal with the Ravens very real if the money is right.
