Recap: Raiders beat Browns 27-20 after late second INT

The Oakland Raiders have their first back to back wins since the 2012 season and their first road win since the 2013 season after a big performance against the Cleveland Browns was enough for the team to hold onto a 17 point fourth quarter lead after Josh McCown’s comeback bid fell short on Sunday afternoon.

In control for the majority of the game thanks to a lights out game from Derek Carr, the Raiders let Cleveland have some hope in the fourth quarter. A fumble from Amari Cooper allowing the Browns to come within seven points before the Raiders failed to take advantage of a muffed punt late, giving McCown one last drive needing 98 yards to tie things up and to complete what would have been an impressive comeback for Cleveland.

McCown drove the Browns into the Raiders territory with the game on the line, putting fear into the hearts of Oakland fans who have been through plenty of heartbreaking losses in recent years. A 17 point lead suddenly not feeling very safe as the veteran quarterback who got the start over Johnny Manziel put his team into touching distance of a comeback.

With the Browns marching and the Raiders looking for the game-winning stop, a familiar name finished the job to add to his Hall of Fame resume as Charles Woodson took advantage of a McCown throw to the endzone with a bit too much air on it to complete his 61st career interception for the win. Capping off another shootout win for the Raiders that was sealed with late-game drama in the fourth quarter, this time by the face of the Oakland defense in Woodson.

Woodson’s INT prevented disaster for the Raiders, as the team failed to close the door on the Browns on the road thanks to some offensive miscues after strong play for the bulk of the game. The Cooper fumble and some questionable playcalling from Bill Musgrave leading to fourth quarter three and outs giving the Browns their chance to make things interesting. Putting the Raiders in a situation where if not for a timely sack from Neiron Ball followed by the Woodson interception that a heartbreaking collapse could have been in the cards.

In the end, the impressive overall performance from the offense to get a 17 point lead was enough for the Raiders to hold onto a big road win to go 2-1 on the season. Derek Carr’s 314 yard, two touchdown performance outdueling McCown on the road making for a second straight week that has this Raiders team heading into the right direction. It may have required a game-saving interception from Woodson in a game that ended closer than it should have been, but the Raiders have their back to back win and their first road win since 2013.
